Red Oak is on Blackland Prairie clay — the same expansive soil that runs through most of Ellis County. It moves with every wet spring and dry summer, and it is the main reason driveways in the area crack and heave when the sub-grade was not prepared.
We compact and moisture-condition the sub-grade before the pour, keep reinforcement in the middle third of the slab on chairs, and cut control joints at spacing that suits the clay rather than whatever the forms happened to allow.
